Environmental health professionals are concerned
with all the factors, circumstances, and conditions in the surroundings
of humans that can exert an influence on human health. One branch
of environmental health, occupational health, deals specifically
with the industrial setting. Environmental and Occupational Health
is a broad discipline that covers diverse areas such as toxicology,
industrial hygiene, environmental hygiene, environmental policy,
occupational and environment medicine, sanitation, and epidemiology.
Environmental and occupational health specialists
are employed in various public health settings: regulatory agencies
such as the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA), Agency for
Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), World Bank, and National
Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), World
Health Organization, and state, county and city health departments;
industry; consulting companies; occupational medicine groups;
schools and universities; and many other non-governmental organizations
that deal with environmental health issues.
